Regular Meeting Minutes
Monday, January 11, 2021
4:00 P.M. Zoom Conference Call

I. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Commissioner David Wendtland at 4:05PM.
Present: Commissioner David Wendtland, Muskegon, Michigan, Commissioner
Johnny Brown, Muskegon, Michigan and Commissioner Larry Spataro,
Muskegon, Michigan. Also present: Kristen N. Wade, Civil Service Director,
Frank Peterson, City Manager, Dwana Thompson, EEO & Employee Relations
Director and Lisa Vanderlaan, Departmental Clerk.
II. MINUTES
Motion was made by Commissioner Brown and seconded by Commissioner
Spataro to approve the regular meeting minutes of the December 14, 2020
meeting.
Motion Carried.
III. ACTION AGENDA
A. Muskegon Firefighter Letter
Mike Hewartson, President of the Muskegon Firefighters Union, stated that the
Union would like the oral examination be done through Empco. The Union
feels that having the oral exams conducted by Empco would be objective and
non-bias.
City Manager, Frank Peterson, stated that he feels that the oral exam is an
important piece to the promotional puzzle. He feels that management needs to
maintain control of the oral exam to ask the questions that they feel are
important.
Commissioner discussion ensued.
Motion was made by Commissioner Spataro and seconded by Commissioner
Wendtland to disapprove the request from the fire fighters regarding the oral
testing as presented.
Motion Carried.
B. Approve the following job description and emergency appointees: Director
of Tenant Relations and appointees Donald Baker and Jake Laime
Motion was made by Commissioner Brown and seconded by Commissioner
Spataro to approve the Director of Tenant Relations job description as
presented and appoint Donald Baker as Arena Maintenance Worker and Jake
Laime as Director of Tenant Relations.
Motion Carried.
