As the growth of short-term rental (STR) companies, such as AirBnB and VRBO, becomes more prevalent, many communities across the state are discussing policies that would manage the popularity of this lodging opportunity. Local units of government are seeking to establish reasonable rules and regulations that strike the delicate balance of allowing short-term vacation rentals in ways that keep all property owners in mind.

Like other Michigan communities, there are many short-term rental properties located with our neighborhoods and which are only occupied seasonally. It is important that the city maintain the ability to manage short-term vacation rentals. Reasonable regulations, when needed, balance the needs of our full-time workforce while providing places for visitors to stay. We are best positioned to know the unique needs of our community when contemplating these zoning issues. We are best suited to initiating zoning policies and practices designed to maintain the delicate balance between residential and commercial uses, residents and investment property owners, all the while protecting the health, safety, and welfare of residents, renters, and visitors.

More recently, the city has received questions and comments from residents and business owners interested in learning more about short-term rentals and its impact in our community. As a result, the city is hosting a Short-Term Rental Community Workshop to understand the impacts around the city. Can’t attend the workshop? Use an online feedback form to make your voice heard.
