Alert | Email Scam Targeting Contractors and Property Owners

September 23, 2025

The City of Muskegon would like to warn the community about a sophisticated email scam targeting contractors, property owners, and other professionals. Scammers are sending emails that appear to be official communications, often including attachments or requesting wire transfers or ACH payments.

Key things to know:

  • These emails are NOT from official city email addresses (e.g., @shorelinecity.com).
  • Emails may reference real projects or programs to appear legitimate.
  • Attachments may include fake invoices; do not pay or provide personal/banking information if the invoice seems suspicious.

What to do if you receive a suspicious email:

  • Check the sender’s email carefully—look for addresses that do not end with @shorelinecity.com.
  • Do not click links or pay any requested fees.
  • Forward the email to [email protected] to verify legitimacy before taking any action.
  • Keep the email and attachments for reference if reporting.

Stay vigilant—scammers are using increasingly convincing tactics, including AI-generated content, to target individuals and businesses.
