Job Duties and Opportunities

Muskegon Police Officers provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, promoting good community relations, and patrolling assigned area to prevent crime; enforce laws, ordinances and traffic regulations, control crowds, and arrest violators; and may perform a specialized police activity such as criminal investigations, undercover surveillance, or participate in juvenile cases. Opportunities within the department include investigations, the Neighborhood Policing Unit, the West Michigan Enforcement Team (WEMET), Crime Activity and Traffic Team, Honor Guard, Crisis Intervention Team, and more.

Selection Process

The selection process follows the City of Muskegon Civil Service rules. This includes an examination, panel interviews, background investigation, and medical and psychological examination.

Licensing, Police Academy and Field Training

In order to be considered for a police officer position, candidates must be a licensed Michigan Police Officer, currently attending a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certified police academy, or eligible for MCOLES licensing. Since 2016, the Muskegon Police Department has sponsored some police recruits to go to the police academy. All new officers to the department will also complete a Field Training Program.

Salary and Benefits

Over the length of the current contract, the salary range of a licensed Muskegon Police Officer is $52,416 – $99,372. The pay scale is based on experience and longevity. A 6% residency bonus and donor sponsored City home buyer incentive program is also available.

Benefits offered to Muskegon Police Officers include generous health, dental, and life insurance coverage, 13% employer contribution to a 401K, paid vacation, personal and sick time, education bonuses, shift and specialty position bonuses, tuition reimbursement, fitness club reimbursement, and 12-hour shifts.
