Jonathan Seyferth, City Manager

Muskegon City Manager, Jonathan Seyferth, brings more than 15 years of government experience at the local, state and federal level to the City Manager’s Office. He joined the staff in 2022.

Prior to coming to the City of Muskegon, Jonathan served as the Township Manager for Gaines Charter Township south of Grand Rapids. He has also served the City of Coopersville in Ottawa County for nearly six years as its City Manager and Assistant City Manager/Planning Director. Before moving into senior municipal management, Jonathan worked for Muskegon Area First (now GMED) and was Executive Director of Muskegon’s downtown development agency, Downtown Muskegon Now, where he helped spur the redevelopment of Muskegon’s Western Avenue corridor.

Jonathan was drawn to the Muskegon manager position because of the unique opportunity to serve his home community while helping the team develop policies and practices that allow for meaningful community engagement in the planning and governance process. He’s excited to be part of a team of innovative colleagues and elected officials as they work together to create a welcoming and diverse community for everyone who wants to call Muskegon home.

Jonathan is a fifth generation Muskegon County native. He is a graduate of Whitehall High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in international administration from Central Michigan University as well as a Master’s in Public Administration with a concentration in Local Government from the University of Colorado Denver.

Jonathan and his partner, Matt, love to bike, hike and walk. They live in the Nelson Neighborhood where they enjoy being close to all that Muskegon has to offer.
