Keeping of Chickens


Chicken Keeping & Enclosure Requirements

  • A development permit is required to keep chickens in the city.
  • Up to six (6) female chickens may be kept on a residential property that is at least 3,000 square feet in size.
  • Roosters are not allowed in the city.
  • All chickens must be kept in a chicken coop, which is considered a fenced or fully enclosed structure.
  • The chicken coop cannot be taller than 10 feet, must be located at least five (5) feet from the side and rear property line, and be at least six (6) feet from the house, 25 feet from neighboring homes, and cannot cover more than 50% of the rear yard.
  • The chicken coop must be maintained and repaired in a manner that is resistant to predators.
  • Ground feeding is prohibited. All feedings shall be contained in the chicken coop. All unused or unconsumed food shall be adequately secured and stored after every feeding.
  • A site plan showing the location and size of the chicken coop must be provided with the development permit application.

You will need to provide a site plan showing the size and location of the chicken coop with all setbacks measured and labeled.
