Calling Small Business Startups: Apply for Small Storefronts at Western Market in Downtown Muskegon

February 11, 2026

MUSKEGON, MI – Applications are now open for small and emerging retail and food businesses interested in leasing a seasonal, small-format storefront at Western Market in downtown Muskegon for the 2026 tourist season.

Western Market features a row of 17 individual, freestanding storefronts designed to help entrepreneurs test, launch, or grow their business in a high-visibility location. These compact spaces range from 90 to 150 square feet and are ideal for makers, retailers, and food-focused businesses looking to build a customer base and gain real-world retail experience.

The program is designed primarily for small and emerging businesses seeking exposure in Muskegon’s retail and food scene during peak tourism months. Vendors benefit from consistent foot traffic throughout the season and during major downtown events such as the Muskegon Farmers Market, Art Fair, Rebel Road, and other high-attendance community gatherings.

Proven Success at Western Market

Western Market has already helped local businesses take the next step, with vendors successfully transitioning from the small storefronts into permanent brick-and-mortar locations. Businesses like Fillanthropie and Geek Lounge both moved into year-round spaces after launching at Western Market.

“The Western Market is about more than a space to sell — it acts as a launch pad for entrepreneurs ready to start their own businesses,” said Isabela Gonzalez, Development Analyst with the City of Muskegon. “We’re proud of the vendors who have taken advantage of the resources around them and grown into brick-and-mortar businesses, and we’re excited to help the next group do the same.”

Tarah Buchan, owner of Fillanthropie, shared her experience launching through the program:

“I feel so fortunate to have been selected to open Fillanthropie at Western Market. Being front and center downtown truly played a major role in our success in growing the refill community. It provided an affordable way to start my business, make important connections with customers, and collaborate with other Western Market vendors. We will miss our sweet little storefront and will always look back fondly on where we got started as we begin our next journey at 175 W. Clay Ave.”
