What do I do with downed branches and trees in my yard?

Republic will pick up branches and brush with the City’s regular yard waste program. Guidelines are:

  • Branches must be 4 feet or less in length and 4 inches or less in diameter.
  • Place items in a yard waste bag, cardboard box, or 35-gallon can marked “Yard Waste,” or tie them in bundles.
  • Each container or bundle must weigh less than 35 lbs.
  • Pick-up is on your regular trash day. (There may be delays due to the storm. Call DPW if your pick-up is missed.)

If you have debris that is not able to meet the regular rules:

  • City staff will pick up large debris from the terrace (the area between the sidewalk and the street).
  • City staff cannot go onto private property; all items must be on the terrace.
  • Stack debris neatly or cut large items into 8-10 foot lengths to help city staff.
  • Place all debris on the terrace before July 21.

Tree Debris Dumpster Available at Campbell Field Park:

The City is providing two dumpsters for TREE DEBRIS ONLY at Campbell Field Park Parking Lot (1940 Barclay St).
  • If regular pickup rules don’t cover your tree debris and you need it removed quickly, use these dumpsters.
  • Dumpsters are not for general trash and are first-come, first-served.
  • Available from Friday, June 28 at 10 AM to Sunday, June 30 at 6 PM.
  • Contact Public Works at 231-724-4100 for questions or concerns.

Professional Tree Service:

  • If you hire a tree service, they are responsible for removing all debris.

A tree fell into my yard. Whose responsibility is it?

  • The property owner where the tree falls is responsible.
  • City staff will remove trees and branches from sidewalks and roads.
  • City staff cannot help with trees on private property, vehicles, or homes. Contact your insurance company for these situations.

Safety Precautions

  • Downed Branches and Power Lines: Always assume a downed branch is in contact with a live wire and stay away. If you encounter a downed power line, maintain a distance of at least 25 feet, and do not attempt to cut or move trees unless they are free of lines.
  • Generators: If you are using a generator, ensure it is properly ventilated to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Restoration Information: Restoration times may change as the full extent of the damage is assessed. For updates and more information, please check the Consumers Energy Outage Center.
