Downtown Muskegon Splashpad Rehabilitation Design Review

January 31 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The City of Muskegon applied and was awarded a $250,000 grant from the State of Michigan to rehabilitate the Downtown Muskegon Splashpad.  Howmet Aerospace donated $50,000 to the project to fund a new sign and general improvements.

The Michigan Spark Grants help local communities create, renovate, and redevelop public recreation opportunities for residents and visitors—especially those communities whose economies and health were hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These grants support projects that provide safe, accessible, public recreation facilities and spaces to improve people’s health, introduce new recreation experiences, build on existing park infrastructure, and make it easier for people to enjoy both indoor and outdoor recreation. It’s all made possible because of the Building Michigan Together Plan, signed in March 2022, which included a historic infusion of federal funding in state and local parks.

The Downtown Muskegon “Children’s Fountain” was originally made possible by community donors in 2011. Since its creation, the Splashpad has been wildly popular with the public and has been a contributing factor in the revitalization of Downtown Muskegon. As one might expect, the equipment to operate this fun, play activity has endured consistent use resulting in the need for frequent maintenance and repair. Funds from the SPARK Grant will be used to rehabilitate the entire structure and be updated to allow for a more frequent and fun experience for users.

The City issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) and selected Fleis & VandenBrink, a full-service engineering firm located in Muskegon to provide designs for the rehabilitation of the structure. The design will be brought to life using Vortex Aquatic Structures, the top splashpad supplier to ensure the reliability of the parts.

The majority of this project will be recreating the existing splash pad, but additional minor changes will be made. To gather input from the public, the city is hosting a community engagement event on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, to present the initial design drawings and gather feedback from stakeholders on specific options.

Please join us for a presentation followed by a discussion on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, from 5:30-7:00 PM at City Hall- Commission Chambers (933 Terrace St Muskegon, MI). We look forward to seeing you!
