Congresswoman Hillary Scholten speaking in the City of Muskegon

Congresswoman Hillary Scholten visited the City of Muskegon to announce a $380,000 grant award on Thursday, April 25, 2024. The grant funds will purchase a Modular Vehicle Barrier System (MVBS) which will increase safety at large events in Muskegon.

The MVBS is designed to prevent vehicle-born mass casualty incidents during large community festivals, events, and parades. This system will replace traditional wooden or concrete road closure barriers.

The mobile and customizable equipment will harden access points on city streets to provide maximum protection against moving vehicles from entering areas where pedestrians attend the more than one hundred community events that take place each year in the city. The modular system will provide multiple lanes of closure and includes a trailer for storage and transportation

Public Safety Director, Tim Kozal, is excited to add a much-needed additional layer of security and safety for our event organizers and all attendees. He encourages our neighboring municipalities to reach out to staff in the future to use the system for their large community events as well.
