Help Keep Fire Hydrants Clear to Support Emergency Response

January 5, 2026

As winter weather continues across West Michigan, the City of Muskegon is asking residents and business owners to help keep fire hydrants clear of snow and ice to support faster emergency response times.

The Muskegon Police Department reminds the community that there are more than 2,000 fire hydrants located throughout the city. During emergencies, firefighters depend on quick and unobstructed access to these hydrants. You never know when or where a house or business fire is going to occur, for the safety of everyone, please help us keep the hydrants accessible in case of an emergency.

Residents are encouraged to clear at least a 3-foot radius in all directions around any hydrant near their home or business. A clear path from the street to the hydrant should also be maintained, and the hydrant caps and operating nut should be free of snow and ice.

Taking a few extra minutes to shovel around a hydrant can help reduce response times when seconds matter and assist first responders in protecting lives and property. Thank you!
