City of Muskegon Adds New Trees with Consumers Energy Grant

Muskegon, MI – The City of Muskegon is excited to announce the planting of 15 new trees in residential terraces, made possible through a $3,000 grant from the Consumers Energy Community Street & Boulevard Tree Planting Grant Program. Ten trees were planted along Sanford Street, while five additional trees were planted in terraces requested by residents.

The initiative supports the city’s long-term goal to enhance neighborhood amenities, increase green spaces, and provide shade, creating a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

“We’re thrilled to continue this partnership with Consumers Energy and bring even more greenery to our community,” said Dave Bailey, Park Maintenance II and City Arborist. “These trees will provide shade, beauty, and a sense of pride for residents who helped select the locations, making our neighborhoods even more enjoyable places to live.”

Bailey has overseen the Consumer’s Energy Grant for the city’s tree planting projects for the past seven years, continuing a longstanding tradition of utilizing this grant to expand Muskegon’s urban canopy. The City also received this grant in 2024, furthering its efforts to improve neighborhood aesthetics and increase sustainability. Tree species were carefully selected to ensure long-term health and compliance with program guidelines.

Consumers Energy’s Community Street & Boulevard Tree Planting Grant Program assists municipalities by funding tree plantings along public streets and boulevards. Eligible communities within Consumers Energy’s electric service area can receive up to $200 per approved tree, with a maximum reimbursement of $3,000 per municipality each calendar year.
