Oily Rag Fire Safety Reminder

June 27, 2024

The Muskegon Fire Department has had many calls recently due to combustible oily rag piles. Help spread the word about the proper way to dispose of the rags to reduce the risk of fire!

Dry Rags Properly: Spread out the oily rags in a single layer on a non-combustible surface, like concrete, and let them dry completely. Alternatively, hang them individually outdoors in a well-ventilated area.

Use Water and Airtight Containers: Once the rags are completely dry, place them in a metal container filled with water. Ensure the container has a tight-fitting lid to prevent air from entering.

Dispose of Properly: Contact your local waste disposal facility or hazardous waste center to find out the recommended disposal method for oily rags in your area. Do not throw them in regular trash bins.

Avoid Piling Up: Never pile oily rags together as they can generate heat and potentially self-ignite.

Store Safely: If immediate disposal is not possible, store the oily rags in a cool, dry place away from any sources of heat or flame, and make sure the container is sealed tightly.

Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions: Always refer to and follow the disposal instructions provided on the packaging of the oil or product you used.

Regular Disposal: Do not let oily rags accumulate; dispose of them regularly to minimize the risk of fire.

By following these rules, you can safely manage and dispose of oily rags, reducing the risk of fire and environmental harm.
