Open House for Rehabilitated Home on March 31

March 26, 2026

The City of Muskegon’s Community Neighborhood Services (CNS) Department is inviting the public to tour a newly rehabilitated home at 1698 Wood Street during an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31.

The home was purchased and restored using federal HOME Program funds as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to turn vacant and blighted properties into safe, quality housing opportunities for local families.

This project reflects the city’s commitment to neighborhood revitalization by removing blight, improving housing conditions, and creating affordable homeownership opportunities for income-eligible residents.

The rehabilitation of 1698 Wood Street included major upgrades designed to remove health and safety hazards and reduce the need for significant repairs for at least the next 20 years. Improvements include:

  • Brand new plumbing and electrical systems
  • Fully inspected and repaired HVAC system
  • Removal of all lead and asbestos hazards from the home and garage
  • New siding, doors, windows, soffit, and fascia
  • Brand new kitchen and bathrooms
  • ADA-accessible first-floor bathroom
  • Opened up the front porch by removing old windows to create an inviting outdoor setting
  • Open-concept main floor layout
  • Expanded storage and closet space
  • Raised and insulated second-floor ceiling to create code-compliant living space, including three bedrooms, one bathroom, and a bonus living area

Through the HOME Program, the CNS team is also able to provide development and purchase price subsidies that help keep the home affordable for a family earning up to 80% of Area Median Income.

Interested buyers will be able to make an offer with their realtor. Program eligibility will be determined by CNS staff.

“This project is a great example of how we can take a vacant property and turn it into a safe, beautiful home for a Muskegon family,” said Rhonda Kleyn, Grants Program Coordinator. “It’s about strengthening neighborhoods and creating more affordable homeownership opportunities in our community.”

Community members are encouraged to stop by and see the transformation firsthand.
