2026 Muskegon Construction Projects Announced -Public Invited to Annual Construction Season Open House on February 18
February 2, 2026
The City of Muskegon Department of Public Works (DPW) is preparing for a busy 2026 construction season, with major investments planned in roads, utilities, trails, and parks across the city.
Residents are invited to attend the Annual Road + Utility Project Open House on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 4–6 PM at DPW. The open house is a drop-in event designed to give community members a chance to review project plans, ask questions, and talk directly with city staff and project partners. Help spread the word by sharing the Facebook event.
There will be no formal presentation. Instead, attendees can stop by at any time during the event and speak one-on-one with staff and contractors at their own pace. For the first time, Parks and Recreation projects will also be included.
2026 Construction Project Highlights
Two long-anticipated projects are moving into construction in 2026.
Laketon–Lakeshore Trail Connector
The Laketon–Lakeshore Trail Connector will complete a key gap in a regional trail system that stretches from Hart to Muskegon, Grand Rapids, and beyond. The new trail will run along the east side of Sanford Street and the west side of Terrace Street from Laketon Avenue to Shoreline Drive, connecting the Laketon Trail and the Lakeshore Trail.
This project creates a new non-motorized corridor serving nearby neighborhoods, including Marsh Field, McLaughlin, Nelson, and Jackson Hill. In addition to improving local access, the trail strengthens regional connectivity and supports active transportation.
Apple Avenue Reconstruction
A major redesign and reconstruction of Apple Avenue from downtown Muskegon to Home Street is expected to begin in April 2026. This MDOT-led project is the result of extensive collaboration with local businesses, organizations, and community members.
The project is designed to improve safety, beautify the corridor, and replace lead service lines beneath the roadway. While construction will significantly impact traffic, MDOT and the project contractor will implement strategies to reduce disruptions as much as possible. Drivers who regularly commute on Apple Avenue are encouraged to plan ahead.
Parks and Recreation Projects
The Parks and Recreation team will also be available at the open house to answer questions about several major projects planned for 2026, including:
-
Sheldon and Hartshorn bathroom improvements
-
Parking lot improvements at Reese, Buekema, Grand Trunk, and Sheldon
-
Installation of the Richards Park kayak launch
-
Pere Marquette parking and pathway improvements
-
McGraft Park tennis and pickleball court updates
-
Hartshorn accessible fishing improvements
A full list of 2026 road and utility projects, including project descriptions and managers, is available on the City of Muskegon website.
