Severe Storm Hits Muskegon: Public Safety Responding to Numerous Calls, No Reported Injuries

Muskegon, MI – June 25, 2024 – In the early hours of Tuesday, June 25, 2024, a severe storm swept through the City of Muskegon, leaving significant damage in its wake. Public Safety personnel are actively responding to numerous calls across the city. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Areas west of Seaway Drive, including the Nims neighborhood, have numerous blocked roads because of downed trees and wires. At the time of this release, major roads, including Laketon Avenue at Barclay Street and Henry Street between Laketon Avenue and Hackley Avenue, are closed due to storm damage. Clearing of trees must be done in collaboration with Consumers Energy due to many trees being tangled with downed wires. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution, especially around downed branches and power lines.

Safety Precautions:

  • Downed Branches and Power Lines: Always assume a downed branch is in contact with a live wire and stay away. If you encounter a downed power line, maintain a distance of at least 25 feet and do not attempt to cut or move trees unless they are free of lines.
  • Generators: If you are using a generator, ensure it is properly ventilated to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Restoration Information: Restoration times may change as the full extent of the damage is assessed. “Muskegon area residents, use caution this morning,” said Timothy Kozal, Public Safety Director. “If you are cutting trees or need to be outside, please watch for downed lines and do not attempt to cut trees unless you are certain they are free of lines. Stay at least 25 feet away otherwise.”

Public Safety teams will continue to work diligently to address all storm-related issues and ensure the safety and well-being of Muskegon residents. We appreciate your cooperation and patience during this time.
