Noxious Weeds and Tall Grass Rules

The City of Muskegon works to keep neighborhoods clean and safe. Property owners must maintain their yards during the growing season.

Growing Season
• April 15 through October 15

What You Must Do
• Keep grass 6 inches or shorter
• Remove noxious weeds
• Remove dead bushes, dead trees, and stumps
• Remove plants or trees with harmful insects or diseases

Leaves
• Leaf season is September 1 through April 30
• During leaf season, leaves may remain on the ground as they naturally fall
• After April 30, loose leaves are not allowed on properties with a home or main building
• Leaves must be bagged or kept in a contained compost area

If Yards Are Not Maintained
• The city may cut or remove the weeds or grass
• The property owner will be charged for the cost
• Unpaid costs may become a lien on the property
• Violations may result in a municipal civil infraction

Possible Exceptions
Some areas may not be considered a violation, including:

• Approved natural areas
• Native dune plants
• Maintained wildflower gardens
• Leaf compost kept in a small contained area
